Treatment

There are several ways to treat genital warts.

imiquimod cream, 20 percent podophyllin antimitotic solution

0.5 percent podofilox solution, 5 percent 5-fluorouracil cream (5FU) and Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Podophyllin, podofilox and 5FU should be avoided in pregnant women as these can cause birth defects in baby.

Sometime when these medicines are ineffective then warts can be treated by surgical methods including Freezing (cryosurgery), Burning (electrocautery), Laser treatment and surgery.

Prevention

Avoid direct contact with the virus which include avoiding contact with infected skin. infected person should avoid sex with uninfected partner until the disease is resolved. Condoms does not provide effective prevention against HPV, though correct and consistent use of condom can reduce the risk a little.

During the sessions of sex therapy it is a good idea to inform patients about the some of the complications of STD which may lead to sexual dysfunctions. A suggestion of mutual faithful monogamous relationship may take care of several of the problems.

Complications

HPV has been associated with several types of cancers, the most common is cervical cancer in women. The other cancers are vulvar cancer, anal cancer, oral cancer, and cancer of the penis.
